Meet the Team

We have a vast number of employees who have completed apprenticeships at MJM Marine including our Chairman, Brian McConville.  A number of our Senior Management Team started out on Apprenticeship Programmes.

Shea Rooney is the second year of the MJM Marine Apprenticeship Programme and see it as a starting point to progress throughout the company and already has an eye on design. “I’ve an interest in design as well as joinery and would like to go into design in the future.  The good thing about MJM Marine is that there are plenty of opportunities to move up within the company.  Our mentor, Colm Cunningham, started out as an apprentice joiner with MJM Marine and is now a Contracts Director.”

Last year Shea recently took part in the SkillsBuild competition in Southern Regional College where he finished third – a great result considering he had only four months experience in joinery at that time. “The Skillsbuild competition was a great experience and gave me a real boost as I was competing against 2nd and 3rd year apprentices.  I definitely think I did so well thanks to the training I’m getting at MJM Marine.”

Kevin Hughes joined MJM Marine in September 2019 to undertake a Higher Level Apprenticeship in Mechatronic Engineering in conjunction with Southern Regional College.   Mechatronics is a branch of engineering that combines Mechanics, Electronics, Computing and Control Systems which focuses on computer aided design and manufacturing, as well as automated systems and robotics. “When I completed my A’Levels I went to Queen’s University to do Physics but quickly realised that university was not for me.  The course was mainly theory-based where I wanted more practical and hands-on learning which I have found through my HLA,” explains Kevin.  “MJM Marine is an excellent company to do my Apprenticeship through as it is extremely progressive and innovative and very open to adopting new technologies and systems.  When I look at the direction manufacturing and production is going with the introduction of automated factory lines and robotics, there’s no doubt that Mechatronics is the way of the future. The Higher Level Apprenticeship has been the ideal way for me to get into this field of engineering.  I would strongly advice A’Level students who are thinking of a university degree to check out HLA options.  It has definitely worked for me.”
