National Apprenticeship Week 2018 provides the perfect opportunity to shine a light on MJM Group’s Apprenticeship Programme and on some of our excellent apprentices.
Scott Dale is one of our 1st year apprentices having joined MJM Group in September 2017.
At sixteen years of age, it can be very difficult to see how your future will map out but for Scott Dale, an Apprenticeship in Furniture Making and Specialist Joinery with MJM Group in Newry is providing the building blocks for his career.
“Dad is a joiner so I’ve been used to helping him from a young age and have always had an interest in woodwork, although I am also very interest in electrics and mechanics. I heard about the MJM Group Apprenticeship programme at an open day in Southern Regional College in Newry and was immediately very interested. It was a great opportunity to build on skills I had learnt from dad and get a recognised qualification at the end of the apprenticeship.”
Go For It!
Scott is 5 months into his apprenticeship and would already encourage young people to look at the MJM Group programme which will be starting another intake in September.
“If there are boys or girls out there who are considering an apprenticeship, I would say “Go For It!” I am learning real practical skills which will stay with me forever and of course the added bonus is that I am getting paid – I’m earning as I’m learning! It’s hard to beat that! On top of that, all the tools and equipment that I need to do my job are provided by MJM Group so I don’t have to buy my own. That’s a big plus. Being a joiner’s son, I want to have my own tools and with the money I’m earning through the Apprenticeship Programme, I am building up a nice collection.”
As a world leading marine interior fit-out specialist, MJM Group works with some of the world’s largest cruise ships.
“The experienced joiners in MJM Group travel to places like The Bahamas, Singapore, China which sounds amazing. When I complete my apprenticeship, I could have the opportunity to be involved in a fit-out onboard a luxury cruise ship anywhere in the world. That would be awesome.”
Although only sixteen, Scott has already one eye on the future.
“The MJM Group Apprenticeship Programme has already shown me the opportunities that exist within the company. I want to complete my Level 3 Apprenticeship first and then take it from there. MJM Group is a world leading interior fit-out specialist where there are opportunities in production, contracts management, design, estimating, quantity surveying etc. They also work with some of best sub-contractors.
Having worked with MJM Group, I know the standards they expect. I could set up my own company and become a sub-contractor for MJM Group! I am still young but I know that when I complete the MJM Group Apprenticeship Programme, I will have skills that will last me a lifetime and open up endless career possibilities.”
